Retirement of Dr Brian Coffey
December 2014 saw the retirement of Dr Brian Coffey as a GP trainer leaving an inspirational training legacy behind him both as Chairman of the Irish College of General Practitioners from 1998 - 2001 and also in his role as GP trainer on the Cork GP Training Programme for the last thirty years. We wish him a long and happy retirement.
Time spent by trainees in general practice
The Cork Programme is guided by ICGP Criteria, which includes at least half the duration of training as General Practice experience.
Each hospital based S.H.O will spend at least one-week attachment every six months in general practice with a Trainer and this experience is deemed very important and has a specific curriculum.
Induction for the Registrar year
SHO's are assigned to their practices for the registrar year shortly after commencement on the programme. Contractual and accommodation issues are discussed in advance. Trainers have an obligation to ensure that registrars have adequate cover and supervision at all times. An early comprehensive assessment of learning needs is carried out.
