Region Covered

The training programme does not cover a defined region, but is funded by, and is confined to, HSE South. All the training practices and hospitals in the programme are in Co. Cork.

The Training Scheme moved to its present accommodation in 3 Bloomfield Terrace (part of UCC) on the Western Rd in October 2012 with improved teaching and social facilities. Teaching venues include both the Bloomfield premises, UCC Western Gateway building and the UCC Brookfield Health Sciences Building [BHSC]. It is planned to move the programme offices and teaching facilities to St Mary's Primary Care Centre on the north side of Cork city some time in 2018.

HSE South and University College Cork, under the direction of a Steering Committee, jointly administer the programme.

This Committee consists at present of the following:

  • The Director and one Assistant director of the G.P. Training Programme.
  • Three Trainer representatives.
  • Four Trainee representatives.
  • Six Consultants representing the hospitals and specialities within the scheme.
  • Professor of General Practice, U.C.C.
  • The Programme Manager, Community Care, HSE South or his/her nominee.
  • The Administrator, GP Unit, HSE South.
  • Co-opted members at the discretion of the Steering Committee

The Steering Committee meets thrice annually, and the Programme Director carries out routine management and administration. An Executive Committee exists for interim matters. HSE South provides finance.
